Luke Streater took out the Gunnedah Golf Club Championships for the tenth successive year while winning the title for the 18th time overall, as he reigned supreme on the past two weekends.
Streater had a 10-shot lead with his score of 142 after the first weekend, before rounds of 75 and 70 last weekend took his final off-the-stick score to 287.
Troy Dries placed second with 300, after being 12 shots behind at the halfway stage.
After starting in the Gunnedah championships in 2002, Streater first won in 2004 and has since won each year apart from 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2015, with Dries the victor on three occasions.
Streater recalled winning a play-off in 2004 and then losing by one shot in 2005.
As for how it felt to win 10 in a row, he said, “Good, it’s sort of a bit funny.
“The competition’s gotten harder but at the same time you get older, you improve a bit at the same time too.”
The 18-time victor emphasised that playing golf was about “competing against the course” and “competing against yourself”.
“It’s a good mental challenge because it’s just you and the course,” he said.
“You can’t focus on what anyone else is doing because you’re not hitting their shots.”
Streater said this year was the first time in several years that he hadn’t shot under par.
“The course was really tough this year (with the way) they set it up,” he said.
“My goal is always to shoot at least an even par…You’re just trying to beat yourself.
“It’s your own mental game against yourself, and I like to compete.”
On track to equal St George’s record run of 11 consecutive rugby league premierships, Streater quipped that he “can pass the Dragons” while he was a Roosters supporter.
