Gunnedah Garden Club held its monthly meeting at Michael Blackwell’s country garden last week.

The two-and-a-half-acre garden was a blank canvas when Michael established the garden three-and-a-half years ago. Originally, his vision was for a native garden.

He has planted many natives from tube stock but has also planted many roses and deciduous trees. The members enjoyed wandering around the garden and taking in the surroundings.

Michael suggested that the garden club stage a working bee at the Lions Park Garden.

The members enjoyed the beautiful sunshine after the drenching rain the previous week.

The club also welcomed new members Meryl Hennessy and Marg Kersley.

Upcoming activities include a club day trip to Lee and Trish Amidy’s garden at Manilla.

The newly established Manilla Garden Club will also be in attendance, creating an opportunity to foster “friendship through gardening,” the aim of Garden Clubs of Australia.

Planning is well underway for the Gunnedah Garden Club’s 45th birthday luncheon.

Guest speakers are Robyn Bible talking about geraniums and David Phipps talking about African violets.

Coral Lorimer won the raffle kindly donated by Shirley Palmer and Sue Schofield won the potting mix.

This month, Shirley Hall will be hostess and Judy Chapman will bring the raffle.

Michael Blackwell won first place in the flower competition with his camellia. Second went to Helen Murrell for her camellia and third went to Carol Smith for her geranium.

In the vegetable competition, Fay Byrne won first place with her lettuce, second was Ann Penrose’s snow peas and third was Julia Wither’s spinach.
