Gunnedah Triathlon Club had a runner-up placing, a fourth placing and a 25th placing at the World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong last weekend.
Donna Hickey, Kelly Watson and Sarah Stewart proudly wore the green and gold while also representing their hometown with heart, with Sarah saying the Gunnedah Triathlon Club “had a weekend to remember”.
After just six months of training following a broken foot, Donna showed her class across all three legs — strong in the swim, powerful on the bike and determined on the run — to finish second in the world and be the first Australian in the 65–69 age group.
“Her grit, experience and love for the sport were truly inspirational,” Sarah said afterwards.
Kelly delivered an outstanding race to place fourth in the world and be the second Australian in the 45–49 age group, with just 10 seconds separating second and fourth place.
Kelly also backed up on the Sunday to help her mixed relay team achieve an impressive fifth place.
Sarah finished 25th overall and was the 12th Australian in the 35–39 age group, smiling all the way down the finish chute.
It was the first time Sarah competed in a triathlon since 2012.
The Gunnedah trio was cheered on by a sea of green and gold, with Sarah saying the Gunnedah support crew was “easily the loudest on course”.
“Their spirit and energy captured what makes the club so special — community, courage and camaraderie,” she said.
