The Gunnedah Red Devils faced a tough day on the field, being defeated in all four games against the Tamworth Pirates at Ken Chillingworth Oval on Saturday.

In the First Grade men’s match, the Red Devils were defeated 46-29. With a quick succession of penalties awarded in favour of Tamworth within the first five minutes of the game, the Red Devils defence buckled and the first try was scored, setting the tone for the first half. In the second half the Red Devils fought back, becoming the dominant team and began to close the gap.

Despite a valiant second-half effort, Pirates’ resilience proved too good on their home ground and they secured the win. Gunnedah’s tries were scored by Ben Hamparsum, Nick Lyons, Jack Inder, Lachie McArthur, and Cameron Mitchell. Leo Mortimer added to the point score with two conversions.

The Reserve Grade game saw Tamworth prevailing with a score of 27-8. Inside centre Ratu Vuibau scored the sole try for Gunnedah, while Sam Osborne converted one penalty goal.

Missing several of their usual starting players, the Red Devils Women’s Xs team endured their biggest loss of the season, ending the game at 34-0 against the Pirates.

Despite the team loss, players Kylie Sanderson (hooker), Georgia Smith (second row) and Laura Higgins (winger) all showcased exceptional moments throughout the game in defence.

Kylie Sanderson was outstanding in defence for the Red Devils’ women’s side against the Pirates.

The Third Grade game was played in great spirits and was a crowd favourite. Gunnedah went down to Tamworth 27-10 with John Waugh and Josh Carter each scoring a try for the Red Devils.

This weekend, the Red Devils have a club bye and will return to action on June 29 in Narrabri against the Blue Boars.
