I would like to bring attention to the negativity that has occurred regarding the decision of Premier Chris Minns to restrict trading hours for retail stores on Anzac Day.
Anzac Day was the day set up during the horrors of WWI to remember the lives of young Australian and New Zealand soldiers who lost their lives during those early battles on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The loss of life continued for the remainder of WWI and all the conflicts that Australia has been involved with since.
It wasn’t only the lives lost during conflict that we remember on Anzac Day, but all veterans who returned and their families and suffered the consequences of warfare. This suffering is still felt today.
If, as a society we cannot survive one day when the major shops are shut for remembrance, then the suffering mentioned above will be in vain. Those who died for our freedom will never shop again, while we who remain can shop for the other 364 days.
I rest my case.
