Almost two dozen drivers and co-pilots took part in an observation rally from Gunnedah to Coonabarabran last weekend.

Hosted by Gunnedah Motoring Enthusiasts, the touring cars started at the Railway Hotel Gunnedah and travelled to Sliding Springs Observatory.

Stacey Mitchell, who was in her “obs rally” vehicle, with GME club president David Garth, said the observation competition provided a fun extra element to the Sunday drive.

“It was a fabulous day, enjoying the friendly competition of deciphering clues and hunting for the landmarks as we ‘rallied’ our way to Coonabarabran where we enjoyed a delcious lunch among old and new friends while enjoying spectacular views along the way and then from the top of Australia’s largest telescope,” Stacey said.

Joining the touring party was Geoff Barker driving his 1969 Mach 1 Ford Mustang.

Mr Barker had long wanted to own the classic muscle car but it was only recently that dream became a reality.

“I wanted one for about 40 years, so when the opportunity came up in Gunnedah, I just couldn’t pass it up,” he said.

The seller was Gunnedah businessman Doug Brown who was eventually persuaded to part with his treasure.

“I said to Doug ‘if you ever wanted to sell it, let me know’,” Mr Baker recalled.

“Initially he said no but later he got in touch and said yes – and that was only because he’d ordered a new one.”

Attention now turns to the GME Hillclimb this weekend.
