A welcome return to Gunnedah by former club champion Gabby O’Gorman was a highlight of the recent Gunnedah Tennis Club championships.
Gabby, who has a long history and tradition with local tennis and further abroad, took out her sixth Gunnedah Tennis Club singles title.
After leaving Gunnedah in 2019 on a four-year US College scholarship to Penn State University Pennsylvania, Gabby finished her degree and has resided in the US for the past two years.
Home for a small break, Gabby took out the women’s singles title as she defeated defending champion Isabelle Moore in convincing fashion.
The result was 6-2 6-0.
Gabby then teamed with her mum Trish, who returned to the court following recent knee surgery.
Gabby and Trish however couldn’t quite hold off Isabelle Moore and Ellie Ryan in the women’s doubles final: 6-2 7-5.
Gabby completed the championships with a win in the mixed doubles with her former coach and multiple club champion Dale Martin. They defeated Craig Louis and Ellie Ryan 4-6 7-5 6-3.
As mentioned on October 3, former Gunnedah junior Nick Barnier defeated local coach Craig Louis in the men’s singles.
Nick spent a number of years at The Armidale School and then moved to the Gold Coast to further his education.
Following his singles triumph, Nick teamed with Craig to win the men’s doubles championship.
Nearly 100 players contested the championships, which was well up on numbers from previous years.
Gunnedah Tennis Club continues to run the Wednesday night instacomp at 6pm.
Additionally, a social competition is being run from 6pm on Fridays.
Anyone interested in a game of tennis is welcome to come along on either night.
