Melbourne Cup day did not turn out to be a successful day for Mayfair Spirit, which competed at Randwick after winning the Gunnedah Cup on May 26.
The nine-year-old gelding was one of three runners for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees in race seven at Randwick on Tuesday.
Known as ‘Little Dance’, this race featured 20 runners on a track rated a Good 4 while the distance was 1600m.
Ridden by Serg Lisnyy, Mayfair Spirit was the equal-last favourite but was in the top three at the halfway stage of the race before finishing last.
Lees’s two other runners in the race came ninth and tenth.
Ridden by Andrew Gibbons at Gunnedah, Mayfair Spirit won the main race that day by just 0.1 of a length after being the fourth favourite in a field of 13.
The ‘Little Dance’ race featured total prizemoney of $750,000 and $430,500 for first place.
