The Gunnedah Jockey Club is gearing up for the Christmas Hams Race Day, with nominations for the December 7 event opening at 11am on Monday (December 2).
The club has worked hard to prepare the track, with club president Mark Wilkinson saying, “We’ve implemented best practice maintenance following the guidance of former NSW Racing Track Management Expert, David Hodgson.
“This has included soil testing, de-thatching the turf, and collaborating with a local agronomist to ensure precise fertiliser application and optimal watering to encourage deep root growth.
“The track is looking magnificent and is on target to be rated a Good 4, with forecast rain set to further enhance conditions.”
Wilkinson said the club was “incredibly proud of the condition of the track, and (we) urge trainers to support the meeting and enjoy racing on a surface that reflects months of hard work”.
Local trainer Gavin Groth recently put a few horses through their paces during track work, including Flying Deal and Skipton Farm while apprentice jockey Hannah Johnson rode the gallops.
Flying Deal is aimed at the Benchmark 1250m race at the Christmas Hams meeting.
Groth was full of praise for the track, saying, “Our track is in good condition at present. It’s looking great for everyone, and we’re planning to have a handful of runners for the day – it should be a fantastic event for all involved.”
Nominations for the Christmas Hams Race Day can be submitted via the Racing NSW website, and the Gunnedah Jockey Club encourages trainers to get behind this event and take advantage of the great conditions at Riverside.
