The Gunnedah Jockey Club is gearing up for a thrilling Christmas Hams Race Day at Riverside Racecourse this Saturday, with strong nominations received including 153 entries from a mix of local and regional trainers.
Club president Mark Wilkinson said, “We are really pleased with the nominations, which include a great showing from local trainers Sally Torrens, Gavin Groth, and Sue Bigg.
“The course is currently rated a Soft 6, though that may change depending on what mother nature has in store for us between now and Saturday.”
Wilkinson also expressed gratitude to the event’s sponsors.
“A big thank you to Boggabri Coal Operations, Courthouse Hotel, Gunnedah Leather Processors, Ultra Lubricants, Cool Blue Ice, Ultra Fleet, and Mannion Drilling for making this day possible,” he said.
“It’s going to be a fantastic day for everyone to enjoy the races and kick off the festive season.”
Among the strong local contingent, Torrens is hopeful about her runner Hammoon Goddess in the H&M Refrigeration 1300m Boosted Maiden Plate.
“She’s my best chance on Saturday,” Torrens said.
“She ran fifth on November 26 in Tamworth’s Super Maiden, which was just her second start for us.
“Despite starting from the back after drawing a wide gate, she came home really nicely.”
Torrens shared more about the promising mare, saying, “Hammoon Goddess is by Stratum Star.
“We purchased her after her first two runs and gave her a 50-week spell to rehabilitate before putting her back into work.
“She’s showing a lot of potential, and we’re really pleased with her progress.”
Fashions on the Field, live music, family-friendly activities and ham raffles will be part of the event, along with the racing.
Marquee seating has sold out, with more than 700 tickets sold for marquee and table seating.
Gates open at 11am.
