Gunnedah swimmers were treated last weekend to a special clinic focusing on the key fundamentals of breaststroke.

Head coach Colin Marley worked with 20 swimmers in small groups during pool sessions across two days as he taught specific technique, drills and exercises.

Drawing on his wealth of experience in swim teaching and coaching, Marley was assisted by accredited coach Dan Ramien to not only focus on the basics of breaststroke, but also to improve swimmers’ stroke and provide tailored feedback and advice.

“Breaststroke is the most technical stroke and to swim it fast, there is specific technique to incorporate,” Marley said.

“We broke it down to small sessions to give one-on-one work and did specific drills to fix things both on land and in the water.”

Breaststroke is notorious for stroke infractions that lead to disqualifications during swimming races, particularly with junior swimmers due to an incorrect kick.

This was one of the main drivers for the clinic along with overall stroke correction and improvement.

The sessions provided a valuable learning experience for all swimmers.

Due to its success, the swim club aims to host more clinics in the near future.
