New Gunnedah shire mayor Colleen Fuller has described the long hours behind the scenes for councillors and staff at local government.

Cr Fuller, who in September was re-elected to Gunnedah Shire Council and subsequently voted in as mayor, told colleagues the first few months have been some of the toughest of her council career.

“Becoming a councillor comes with many more responsibilities than our community might see,” Cr Fuller said.

“Our last meeting day, December 4, started at 7.30am and continued without breaks until about 6pm – one of the longest and most intense days I have experienced in my 21 years as a councillor.

“It shows just how committed each of us is to this position, and how determined we are to work as a team on even the most difficult matters.

“A big thank you to councillors for what has been a mammoth effort since we were elected. I would also like to thank the staff at Gunnedah Shire Council for all the work that has been done to get councillors up to speed. Much time has been spent in assisting councillors with the council induction process and a great deal of progress has been made.”
