Only one point separated the top two teams as 14 teams competed in last Wednesday’s Australia Day-themed trivia night at the Gunnedah Golf Club.

With up to six people on each team, Dream Team tallied 65-and-a-half points while Travelling Bilbys finished on 64-and-a-half, followed by seven teams ranging from 50 to 53-and-a-half.

There were five rounds containing 10 questions for each team while there were also three preliminary rounds involving three individuals, followed by a final involving the top five individuals.

Nigel McIlveen was crowned the individual champion with Donna-Maree Kelly as the runner-up, while the other finalists were Grant McIlveen, Andre Steele and Tony Moran.

Vouchers were the winning prizes, while movie passes were given to the runners-up. The Gunnedah Golf Club supplied the vouchers to the Amici Restaurant as well as other prizes, while the movie passes were supplied by Gunnedah Shire Council.

There was also a game of ‘heads or tails’, as well as a game of ‘last person standing wins’.

Topics covered throughout the night included science and nature, music, sport, general knowledge, current affairs, art and literature, entertainment, local knowledge, geography and history.

When several lines from a famous Dorothea Mackellar poem were read out, contestants had to name the poem. Six teams correctly answered ‘My Country’, while others incorrectly answered ‘I love a sunburnt country’.

With many participants being regulars at the annual trivia night, event organiser Jacinta Stanley said the turnout was a bit bigger than usual while there was plenty of enjoyment.

“That’s what we aim for – fun,” she said.
