Plenty of newcomers are set to take to the field for the Gunnedah Red Devils this Saturday, as the rugby union club’s first and second grade teams have their first hit-out of the year.

About 40 players across the two grades are expected to line up against the Tamworth Magpies in trial matches at Gunnedah Rugby Park.

While many of the Red Devils will make their first appearance for the club, a contingent of continuing players will likely include John McKay, Nick Lyons, Lachie Straney, Tom Witts, Hamish Hockings, Patrick Grant, Bill Whitney and Tom McGowan.

Tim McDermott will be among Gunnedah’s absentees as he is overseas, while a familiar face in the Tamworth squad will be Will Burke who skippered the Red Devils in recent years before transferring to the Magpies.

This Saturday will be the third pre-season outing for the Magpies, who played in the Armidale Knockout a few weeks ago before hosting Woy Woy last Saturday.

McKay said the scoreline this Saturday wasn’t a big concern, as the main things for the Red Devils included dusting off the cobwebs and trying out new combinations.
