More than 70 people descended on Club Gunnedah from last Friday to Sunday for the town’s annual Phoenix Darts competition.
Twenty-four pairs took part on the first night, and then there were 32 pairs on day two before the final day yielded 70 players for singles.
There were round-robin fixtures as well as a knockout format, and then semi-finals and a grand final each day.
Visitors came from Toowoomba, Tamworth, Inverell, Moree, Young, Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast, while there were also plenty of locals as there were some newcomers and many returning participants.
Roger Gibbs of Toowoomba and Mick Asbury of Tamworth won on the first night, which was mainly a warm-up as the visitors settled in shortly after arrival.
Mitchell Clegg of Newcastle and Scott Johnson of Sydney were the pairs champions on day two while the second placegetters were Gary O’Brian and his son Shannon, both from Inverell.
Clegg continued his splendid form on the final day as he won the singles division, while the runner-up was Brodie LeStrange of Young.
Seventeen scores of 180 were recorded last Saturday, and 24 were recorded the next day.
Gunnedah Men’s Dart League secretary John Woolaston said everyone had a good time not only with playing darts, but also socialising and having a few drinks.
Woolaston said it was a relaxing and enjoyable occasion while participants helped each other out, particularly with scoring.
