Fantastic news the NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe announced on Sunday, September 7 that the Great Koala National Park has progressed and the logging of native forest areas to temporarily halt.

The addition of 176,000 hectares will be added to the already existing reserves. This area of 476,000 hectares will protect up to 12,000 koalas and other threatened species like the Greater Glider.

The section of land spans from inland of Coffs Harbour, south to Kempsey and far north to Grafton.

This commitment was made in the 2023 State Election by Premier Chris Minns.

During this process I have made several attempts to get Gunnedah put on the radar for this program.

I will keep advocating for our Gunnedah koala population which at this time does not seem to be in stable condition.

Even though this area that has been announced is not in my local government area, it still may impact Gunnedah if we can raise awareness of our situation and help bring back the iconic Gunnedah koala.
