Gunnedah’s PJ Plumbing soccer team came first in the U8 age group at the Narrabri junior soccer carnival last Sunday, as Gunnedah fielded just the one team at the carnival.

The carnival was a mixed gala day with age groups from 5/6 to 15/16 years, with the event somewhat resembling the mixed junior soccer gala day which Gunnedah hosted on August 17.

Teams from Narrabri, Moree, Inverell, Wee Waa and Coonabarabran took part last Sunday, along with the Gunnedah 8s.

With a couple of teams pulling out of the 8s age group, Gunnedah opposed the Narrabri Yabbies four times and emerged triumphant in three of them.

The team played very well on a warm spring day, with Charlie Beer, Tommy Boxsell, Theodore da Silva, PJ Hickman, Maxon Kelaher, Harry Roberts and Roy Wilkinson all contributing.

It was the second successive year in which Gunnedah won this age group with Paul Hickman as coach while the team included his son PJ.

Gunnedah and District Soccer Association committee member Lachlan May said it was “great to get out and support another grassroot junior soccer organisation after a flood/weather affected season”.

“The fields presented magically for all the players, and it was clear to see that the Narrabri Junior Soccer committee put in a great deal of effort to make it such a successful day for the kids,” he said.
