February 21 is International Mother Language Day, recognising the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. The focus for 2026 is ‘youth voices on multilingual education’, emphasizing that language is more than a means of communication: it is central to identity, learning, well-being and participation in society.

The library has a range of options if you are looking for reading materials in languages other than English. We can also access books in multiple languages through the State Library of NSW, both fiction and non-fiction, with children and adult titles available. Ask the library staff to find out more.

Spotlight: NEW BOOKS

Ghost Cities (AF LU) by Siang Lu was Shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards in 2025. Following multiple narratives, it is inspired by the vacant, uninhabited megacities of China. It is an intricate tapestry of narratives: a Chinese consulate translator who doesn’t speak Chinese, an ancient Emperor who creates a thousand doubles of Himself, a chess-playing automaton, and a tale where every known book is destroyed – then recreated, page by page, all in the name of love and art.

The Co-Parenting Method (649 SHA) by Marcie Shaoul will help you navigate the emotional impact of separation on your children. Her six-step strategy offers a clear and compassionate step forward. Discover how to communicate effectively, set healthy boundaries and make decisions as a team, with the desired outcome that your children feel safe and supported.

Kate Cocks returns in Murder on North Terrace (AFA AND) by Lainie Anderson. After solving their first case, Woman Police Constables Cocks and Bromley are back on the beat. When a powerful board governor is found dead in the Art Gallery, it goes to the heart of Adelaide’s elite, while Miss Cocks is left grappling with shadows in alleyways and a brutal assault on a schoolgirl.

As Art Spiegelman said: “Comics are a gateway drug to literacy.”
