The Gunnedah-based Black ‘n’ Blue boxing gym celebrated two victories in last Saturday’s Mayhem Fight Series at Souths Merewether in Newcastle.
Matthew Williams won one of the headline bouts via a unanimous decision (UD), after Michael Borradaile won his bout with the same verdict.
Another Black ‘n’ Blue member, Emylie Murrell, took part in an exhibition bout which didn’t involve a result.
With 22 amateur bouts on the cards, Williams competed in the 21st before the final one was the other headline bout.
The two headline bouts involved four rounds of two minutes each, after the previous fights yielded three rounds.
Williams found himself against Jordan Haggart in the cruiserweight division, after the former had previously won titles in the heavyweight division.
Williams’s victory last Saturday enabled him to gain a belt, to go with other prizes he had won in previous fights.
Williams said he had fun with his bout in Newcastle and felt relaxed and comfortable, as if he was “meant to be there”.
A blow from Williams resulted in his opponent hitting the canvas late in the first round, but Haggart rose to his feet and resumed the battle.
Despite feeling comfortable, Williams said the fight “went back and forth” while Haggart had an awkward style.
Williams said Haggart kept coming forward and holding and wrestling, “hitting me while he was grabbing me”.
Williams said he felt he improved from his previous fight, but still had more improvements to make.
In the 12th fight of the night, Borradaile opposed Harvey Neville in the bantamweight division.
With the pendulum also going back and forth in this contest, Borradaile knocked Neville to the canvas in the third round before the latter rose to his feet.
Although saying he felt in control for the most part, Borradaile said his opponent “had his moments too” although the Gunnedah-based boxer probably landed more cleaner shots.
In the ninth bout of the night, Murrell encountered a newcomer who was lighter than her in an unofficial heavyweight contest.
Murrell said it was beneficial to have some time in the ring, with the combatants landing some good shots without forcing each other to fall.
Williams, Borradaile and Murrell have their eyes on competing in a fight night at Windsor on March 21, although the bouts at this event are yet to be finalised.
