Gunnedah Speedway Club driver Matt Cobb was named NSW champion, after winning the main event at the Racing Sedans Australia (RSA) Street Stockers NSW titles at the Tamworth-based Oakburn Park last Saturday night.

Cobb was among 50 drivers from around the state, before it boiled down to the final 24 in the feature race to decide the RSA Street Stocker Championship title.

Among 10 drivers in three heats of 15 laps each, Cobb won each of these heats from a different position.

After starting at the rear in the first heat, he was in pole position for the second heat before being in the middle of the pack for the third heat.

Cobb also began in pole position for the main race, which involved 35 laps.

Cobb had a hiccup in the first 10 laps of the main race when he briefly spun out of control and slipped to third place, but he steered himself back on track.

There was a stoppage on lap 19 and another stoppage on lap 30, before the race resumed.

Cobb said it felt “pretty good” to win a NSW title, after he had taken a break of about eight months to focus on other things before he resumed speedway racing several weeks ago.

Cobb said he had been a bit nervous and that he wasn’t 100 per cent sure if his car was up to the test.

Following the earlier races there were a lot of tyre marks on the track, with Cobb saying “the track went black” and that the conditions were tricky due to the track being slick.

“You need to take advantage of others’ mistakes,” he said.

“There’s no real plan.

“If you have a plan, it never goes to plan.

“It’s more about taking advantage of a situation when you’re there.”

Cobb said his previous biggest achievement was winning a Newcastle Stocker Series title in the 2022-23 season, after he began racing with the Gunnedah Speedway Club in 2018 before starting in the Stockers division in late 2020.

Cobb thanked his family and friends for their support.
