Gunnedah Multicultural Women’s Association came together to celebrate International Women’s Day at the weekend.
Multicultural Women’s Association (MWA) wanted to create the event to not only encourage women to come together, connect, and support one another, but to also encourage them to get out and socialise.
Over the next year, MWA will be working on creating multiple events with a focus on socialising and helping women connect with community, especially if they are new to the town and or have kids.
“Our goal this year for MWA is to do more stuff for the women this year,” Lisanty said.
“Building connections, building support, and basically creating a safe space for ladies to come together on a night like this and be open, transparent, and real.
“Tonight is special because it’s a good opportunity … for us ladies to get out and have a break from our routines, our responsibilities, and our obligations at home.
“We just want to be able to be together with other ladies, and share our life experiences in a safe space where we can support one another.”
Opening the night with a speech was MWA member Ellen Howland.
She emphasised the importance of working together as a community to help one another.
She hopes that the MWA can become a safe space for women to connect, share their stories, and be open and honest with one another.
“For women, we should be supporting, edifying, and uplifting each other,” Ellen said.
“Life is challenging, and every woman has their own obstacles that they’re facing, don’t think that you have to be perfect all the time.
“I really want to encourage women to break the stigma that women have to be perfect, support each other to be authentic, and to talk about what’s happening.”
The night was well received.
One of the women in attendance, Nadine Gardner, said that events like this are important in helping women connect and not feel as alone.
“Being able to spend time with other ladies has been really nice,” Nadine said.
“I’ve done a lot with the multicultural group previously so, seeing and meeting new people and reconnecting with the group was great. It was really good.”
