There was one victory and one defeat for the Gunnedah-based Black ‘n’ Blue boxing gym last Saturday night, as two members from the gym competed in the BoxFitt fight night at Richmond Race Club.
Michael Borradaile won his bantamweight bout before Matthew Williams was unsuccessful in his bid for a NSW title, as he fought in the cruiserweight division.
There were more than 25 bouts at the Sydney-based venue, including a couple of professional fights.
Having won by a unanimous decision (UD) against Samuel Chav following three rounds of two minutes each, Borradaile said he felt in control of the bout for the most part.
Borradaile said he felt he landed more clean punches than his opponent did, although Chav landed some good blows as well.
The bout involving Williams and Taylor Wood comprised four two-minute rounds, with Williams having previously won a national title in the 17- to 19-year age range while Wood had won a national title at open level.
Williams had won his past few bouts, and said his previous defeat was against a southpaw while his latest loss was against another southpaw.
Williams said he had his moments during last Saturday’s bout, but that his opponent had the better of most of the fight and deserved to win.
“(I can) take the positives and take the negatives, and learn from it,” he said.
Williams described Wood as sharp, quick and fit, while Wood was taller than Williams and also had a longer reach.
“Obviously you don’t like to lose,” Williams said.
“You like to keep the momentum going, (but) every loss is needed.
“It’s just one of those things you’ve got to learn from, and keep pushing.”
Williams said he hoped to fight for a NSW title again, possibly this year.
“Whenever the opportunity is, I’d definitely take it,” he said.
