The make-up of the Gunnedah Red Devils team is far from settled, as the Red Devils prepare to contest reigning premiers the Quirindi Lions at Quirindi Rugby Club this Saturday in round one of the Central North Rugby Union (CNRU) competition.
Although the Red Devils had a squad of 33 while achieving a win and a loss during the recent ‘Tamworth Test’ pre-season day at the Tamworth Rugby Club (aka ‘The Nest’), the availability of numerous players for this Saturday remains clouded.
After captaining last year’s team, experienced forward Tim McDermott will be absent for at least the first two months of this season due to a sabbatical in Belgium while it remains unclear if Adrian Burl plays on.
The captaincy also remains unknown, despite a recent social media post identifying Jack Inder and Billy Tregoning as the men’s club captains.
Gunnedah placed first while Quirindi placed third on last year’s ladder, before the Lions beat the Red Devils 30-21 in the preliminary final on Gunnedah soil and then defeated the second-placed Moree 57-36 on Moree turf in the grand final.
