Gunnedah’s Sally Keeler has been announced among the players selected for the NSW Masters Women’s teams in cricket.
Keeler was among the 12 selections for the Opals team to be managed by Carly Kidd.
The Opals, along with the Blues, Kookaburras and Waratahs teams, will represent NSW in various divisions at the National Championships to be held at Launceston in November.
“It’s exciting to get picked for Tasmania,” Keeler said.
The Opals will represent the state in division two.
Keeler had made it a goal to gain selection for the tournament after making her NSW Masters debut in Brisbane.
She embraced the opportunity to venture to Brisbane at the June long weekend for the Ready-Henry Shield tournament.
Keeler, who has played in a fun Friday night competition in Gunnedah, also previously competed with the NSW indigenous team.
Trials for this year’s championships were held in Sydney, the Central Coast and in southern NSW.
Keeler made the trip to Sydney with the hope of gaining selection.
“It was a surprise,” she said of her selection.
“When I went to the trials, there were some really great cricketers.
“The trials were pretty full-on.”
She is anticipating that November’s championships will be more competitive than her previous masters experience.
“I’ll be working on training … including my batting and bowling,” she said.
The national championships will also be a chance for Keeler to play alongside a friend.
Sharni Kent, originally from Inverell, had played cricket with Keeler during their high school
years.
“It will be an awesome experience,” Keeler said of the championships.
