Gunnedah Shire blooming with activities for spring school holidays

Adventure, creativity and hands-on fun are on the agenda these spring school holidays as Gunnedah Shire Council rolls out interactive activities.

The holidays will kick off with the Gunnedah Shire Library team at the Curlewis Community Hall on Monday 28 September at 2pm, and continue at the library with free Singalong & Storytime and Book Buddies sessions across the two weeks.

Come along and make cardboard caterpillars, busy bees, woolly sheep or moving snails at 10.30am from Tuesday to Thursday.

Older children (ages 7–12 years) can make spring dioramas, 3D turtles, beaded butterflies or a peacock collage in the Crafty Creations sessions.

The sessions are $3 per person. Bookings for the library activities can be made by calling (02) 6740 2190.

On Wednesday 30 September, young people aged 12 to 24 are invited to join the Gunnedah Youth Consultative Council (YCC) between 10am and 4pm for a workshop to brainstorm ideas and plan for a local youth festival in 2027.

The council’s economy and growth manager, Susan Frater, said the YCC had been meeting regularly and wanted to take the opportunity to progress planning for the proposed event.

“The workshop will cover grant application processes and ideas for entertainment at the event and involve potential sponsors to enable our young people to practise their presentation skills,” she said.

“Young people interested in joining the YCC are very welcome but will need to register first.”

The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the creative arts centre, and morning tea and lunch will be provided. RVSP and register for the YCC by calling the council on (02) 6740 2100.

The council is also bringing free movie screenings for ages 12 to 18 to The Civic Theatre in October, thanks to the NSW government Office for Youth.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will screen on Thursday 1 October at 12.40pm and is rated M. The Devil Wears Prada 2 will screen on Wednesday 7 October at 12.40pm and is rated M. Light refreshments will be available from 12.15pm in the foyer before both screenings. Bookings can be made at thecivic.com.au

There is a limit of four tickets per booking and no waitlist.

Council cultural precinct team leader Danny Hankinson said it was a great way to bring young people together to enjoy new films in the holidays.

“These free screenings ensure every family has the opportunity to be part of the fun in our fantastic cinema, regardless of their budget,” he said.

Families will also welcome the start of the summer season at the Gunnedah Memorial Pool Complex on Saturday 3 October.

The operating hours for the complex will be 5.30am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 6pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Entry is via the indoor pool entrance until 9am.
