September has been a very busy month for the Gunnedah Garden Club. It started with a visit to Lee Amity’s home in Manilla, joined by members of the Manilla Social Group. Members said it was a fabulous day, enjoying walking around the garden and the views of the 100 acre property were stunning.
Next was a working bee at the Lions Park garden, organised by member Michael Blackwell, who brought along his trailer to remove the green waste. Volunteers from the Garden Club have been tending these flower beds on the grounds of the hospital for many years. The two circular gardens each have four sections and it was their patron Marj Hill, who originally propagated the rose bushes, which were planted in the centre of each of the eight garden sections.
This month’s meeting was held in the garden of Helen and Graham Murrell, surrounded by a beautiful display of spring colour. They built their home 48 years ago and Helen gave a talk about her garden. Known as the club’s “garden guru”, she can identify many plants and knows their botanical name, while many members say they are lucky to know a plants common name.
The month ended with a luncheon at the Gunnedah Rugby Club, to celebrate the club’s 45th birthday. See story on front page and photos above.
