Gunnedah Jockey Club is gearing up for one of its signature events of the year – the Gunnedah Gold Cup on Sunday, May 29.
Jockey club president Kevin Edmonds said race day patrons are already reserving tables from as far as Newcastle and the coast for the event.
Gunnedah’s Gold Cup race meeting will feature full bar, TAB, live music and fashions on the field.
The club has weathered reduced race day formats in recent years due to COVID restrictions but anticipates a bumper crowd in the thousands for this month’s cup meet.
“We’re getting a lot of bookings for the marquee luncheon,” Mr Edmonds said.
“As with Cup meetings, we will be holding a calcutta on Saturday night, May 28, at the Railway Hotel. All are welcome for about a 7.30pm start.”
Marquee tickets are available for $60 which includes entry to the track, on-course marquee seating, hot buffet lunch and racebook.
Fashions in the field are also back again with prizes in both men’s and women’s categories.
Mr Edmonds said the track should be in really good shape too, with the club committee busy making final preparations in the lead-up to next week’s cup meet.
“We are very fortunate to have a very active committee with very good staff,” he said.
“We have just extended the day yards at the back of the stables for the trainers.
“An extension of the track’s automatic watering system is being installed at the moment and a new internal system has just been completed.”
The club president said the race meetings also support the Gunnedah economy.
“On race days, we welcome more than 60 trainers, their strappers, stable hands and owners to Gunnedah for the races who all spend their money in town,” he said.
“Our area near the bar and kitchen is under cover and lends itself to large gathering for weddings, school graduations and parties. These facilities are available for hire and catering can be arranged.”
General course entry to the Gunnedah Gold Cup is $15 and available at the track. Kids’ entry is free. To reserve tickets in the marquee, contact Lyn on 0427 420 093 or email: [email protected]
