Gunnedah’s top tennis talent turned out for the Todd Woodbridge Cup in Gunnedah on Tuesday.
The school-based tournament is supported by Tennis NSW, in conjunction with Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA), and is aimed specifically for students in grades 3 and 4.
The competition uses modified equipment, numeric scoring and mixed gendered teams. The competition progresses from gala days to region finals and state championships.
Overall winners were Gunnedah South Public School Team 1 which defeated Carroll Public School in the final.
Carroll earned their place in the decider after a strong showing against St Xavier’s Primary School Gunnedah in the semi-final.
Tournament co-ordinator Craig Louis said the narrow margins in many matches were testament to the great tennis on display throughout the day.
He said the competition format was a good introduction to tennis, particularly for those players who are not travelling away for bigger tournaments elsewhere.
