Twenty-one gymnasts from the Gunnedah Gymnastics Centre converged on Armidale for the NSW Country Championships and the inaugural Winter Invitational during the first week of the school holidays.
Senior gymnast, Mikayla Ferguson, competing in National Level 7, made a clean sweep, claiming a total of 10 gold medals for vault, bars, beam, floor and the all-around in both competitions.
In National Level 6, Kelly Briggs also won both titles, claiming gold on vault, bars and beam.
Senior Level 5 gymnast, Bianca Bayliss, outstripped her competitors to claim gold in the all-around, silver on vault, gold on bars, silver on beam and bronze on floor. Team mate, Mia Geddes, brought home the bronze in the all-around, gold on vault and gold on floor.
In the Junior division of Level 5, Lilah Edmunds secured Bronze overall and Silver on Bars. Kate Randall was very close behind in fourth place, with a silver on vault and bronze on bars. Hadley Durrant finished in 11th position overall, combining with the other Level 5 gymnasts to take out second place in the teams event.
From this competition, all seven gymnasts qualified to attend the NSW Intermediate State Championships to be held in Sydney at the end of August.
In the lower levels, with banded competitions, all 10 of Gunnedah’s Level 3 and all four Level 4 gymnasts earned gold medals for their performances. For many of these gymnasts this event was only their second opportunity to compete in open competition, being new to the competition squad in 2024. Following the State Championships for Levels 5-7, all gymnasts will have their sights firmly set on the North West Championships in early September.
