The latest Matthew’s Reserve charity golf day at Curlewis Golf Club was a big hit, as nearly $2000 was raised for the camping area on the far side of Lake Keepit.

Nearly 50 golfers took part last Sunday, with many locals bringing newcomers to make up the teams.

With the Curlewis Sporting and Recreation Group staging a few of these charity events each year, event co-organiser Beck Henderson said the August 31 event was the biggest yet, as more money was raised than at previous charity days.

Beck said the funds on this occasion would be used to install a new toilet block, with the money having been raised from the chipping competition, cheat cards, 100 club raffle, and the auction.

The cheat cards provided a fun way to raise extra money, as a team could pay $5 to tee off 100m closer to the green.

Beck said the 4-person Ambrose format provided “a really fun way to play team golf”.

“It’s great for people who are not full-time golfers or (are) just learning,” she said.

“If you hit a bad one, your teammates can save the day!

“It’s a very social way to play golf.”

Beck said everyone had an amazing time, while there were lots of laughs and cheering for great shots and not-so-great shots.

The winning team comprised Jamie Fordham, Dave Roberts, Wayne Eveleigh and Terry Stevenson while the runners-up were Andrew Turner, Sam Pryor, Dylan Eather and Brock Beasley.

Beck said the course looked absolutely amazing, thanks to recent rain and the work from groundsman and club president ‘Dipper’ Campbell.

“The weather was warm with no wind which we were very happy about,” she said.

Beck expressed thanks to the volunteers as well as those who donated auction items and supported the day.
