A ‘top day out’ was the response from competitors, following the Gunnedah Full Throttle Fest at the Gunnedah Airport on the weekend of September 27 and 28.
Organised by Gunnedah Motoring Enthusiasts (GME), the event had three formats while paperwork approvals were in place for motorsport.
The Saturday flying 250 two vehicle sprints were the most popular; the “Roll Racing” involved a 40kmh start line speed and two vehicles side by side over 250 metres.
Of Saturday’s Roll Racing, Canberra’s Phil Pratt (V10 Audi) took the honours in road registered over 2 litre from Stacey Garth (Mazda) and Barb Swain (Commodore Bash Car).
Geoff Hood was successful in the under 2 litre class (Mitsubishi GME club car).
Tamworth’s Bill Ausling’s Walkinshaw Commodore ute was successful in the over 4 litre division.
The hotly contested type 3 Improved Production class had the most entrants, with Central Coast’s Michael Walker knocking off many of his mates from the visiting Uralla JMC Tuning group.
In special vehicles 4WD it was a battle between club president Peter Holmes (Jeep Trackhawk), GME club scrutineer Glen Swain (Ford Territory Barra-turbo) and Aiden Whitten (Subaru WRX).
Glen outpaced Peter (who won last year’s 800m sprint with a 260kmh!), enabling Glen to take out the inaugural Roll Racing.
On the Sunday, single vehicle release timed sprints of 500 and 800 metres kept competitors focused while there were several local entrants new to the sport.
An impressive top speed of 242kmh was data log recorded by Tamworth’s Dave Rodgers’ Falcon Sports Sedan, taking out ‘class’ and ‘fastest time of the day’ event trophies even though the competitor vehicles had constant 20-40kmh headwinds.
Geoff Hood said overall it was a great event despite earlier difficulties, with the event having been postponed twice due to weather.
“When people from away ring you two days later to say they had a great time, Gunnedah must be on the right track to host a better event, probably March 22, as part of Gunnedah’s annual ‘Weeks of Speed’ festival,” he said.
GME is already planning events for next year.
