Gunnedah will be treated to something truly special this Friday night when Australia’s acclaimed vocal group Coco’s Lunch takes the stage in collaboration with the virtuosic Sai Brothers for Raising Rhythms.

With seven critically acclaimed studio albums, countless awards, and a reputation as pioneers of original vocal repertoire, Coco’s Lunch have enchanted audiences in more than 13 countries. Their music has inspired choirs and vocal ensembles across the globe, and they have been described by the Herald Sun as nothing less than a “national treasure.” The Melbourne-based quartet—Jacqueline Gawler, Lisa Young, Gabrielle MacGregor and Emma Gilmartin—bring together soaring harmonies, percussion-driven rhythms, and genre-defying songwriting that has earned them a loyal following worldwide.

This new collaboration fuses Coco’s Lunch’s sublime vocal textures with the Sai Brothers’ mastery of mridangam, kanjira and tabla. With Coco’s Lunch member Dr. Lisa Young’s renowned konnakol artistry and a shared teaching lineage between the ensembles, the performance unveils a groundbreaking new dimension in the group’s celebrated repertoire. Premiering at the Melbourne Recital Centre in 2023 to a standing ovation and a FOUR STAR review in The Age, Raising Rhythms has since been hailed as a transcendent experience.

While Gunnedah has long prided itself on its love of music, ticket sales for Friday’s performance have been slower than expected. Gunnedah Conservatorium Director Rebecca Ryan admitted the numbers were a little disappointing.

“Our community has such a strong love of music, but at times we are spoiled for choice when it comes to live performances,” she said. “Coco’s Lunch with the Sai Brothers is a rare opportunity to witness world-class artistry right here in Gunnedah.

“If you loved Hot Potato Band earlier this year, you will love this concert too. The program runs for 70mins so is suitable for the whole family and the family ticket of $60 makes tickets just $15. Use this ticket to bring four family members – the cousins or the aunties or the grandparents!”
