Drilling supervisor and self-described tech novice Jono Young says modern-day operations have advanced a long way since his first day on the job.

“I used to say a computer would never drill you a hole but it looks like it will soon,” Mr Young said.

The industry veteran recently celebrated 10 years with Gunnedah company Mannion Drilling.

He considered “software procedures” as among the biggest changes he had seen in drilling operations.

Mr Young traded in a fly-in, fly-out job – where he was three weeks away at a time for work – for a better lifestyle in Gunnedah.

Now happily settled with wife Renee, and their children Quade and Myles, Mr Young is relishing the opportunity to spend more quality time with his family.

He said the Mannion Drilling team is one of the best companies he had worked for.

A highlight of his time in Gunnedah was when he finished runner-up in the Gunnedah business awards ‘Above and Beyond’ service category.

“I really appreciated just being nominated,” Mr Young said.

Business owner Jason Mannion said the long-time member was a valued part of the Mannion Drilling staff.

“Jono’s drive and determination have made him an experienced driller with all aspects of exploration drilling and is known for his expertise in the industry,” Mr Mannion said.
