By KEVIN ANDERSON, MEMBER FOR TAMWORTH
G’day Gunnedah and thank you again for supporting the Gunnedah Times.
The world has come to a halt over the past week to give Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II the recognition she deserves after a life in the public service.
I know there are many in the Gunnedah and surrounding communities who felt a deep sense of sadness when hearing of her passing, a feeling that has been shared by many across the Commonwealth and the world.
Next week, the country will get a one-off public holiday to pay our respects for the passing of the Queen and I have no doubt that many in the Gunnedah community will use this time to reflect on her strong relationship with our country, and with regional NSW over her 70-year reign.
Time to nominate an outstanding woman in our communities
Nominations have now opened for the 2023 NSW Woman of the Year Awards and the community is invited to identify the most outstanding and influential women in NSW.
Our region is blessed to have inspirational women who go above and beyond for their community,
playing a significant role in bettering the lives of those around them and this is a great opportunity to give them the recognition they deserve.
Nominations are now open on the NSW government website for six categories including, ‘Woman of Excellence’, ‘Aboriginal Women of the Year’, ‘Community Hero of the Year’, ‘Young Woman of the Year’, ‘Regional Woman of the Year’, and ‘One to Watch’.
This year, a woman from our region, Walcha’s Anna Barwick, won the prestigious NSW Woman of the Year award and I know that there are women in the Gunnedah region who are just as deserving so get your nominations before the end of the month!
Giving disadvantaged youth a leg-up in life
Applications for the NSW Government’s Youth Development Scholarships are now open. The scholarships provide disadvantaged youth in our region an opportunity to apply for funding to help get them through their final years of schooling.
The one-off $1000 grant can make a huge difference when it comes to buying textbooks or stationery, ensuring they have the tools they need to reach their full potential in their schooling.
If you know someone who may be eligible and in need, please get them in touch with the Department of Communities and Justice and encourage them to apply.
