Local educational specialists are on our doorsteps in Gunnedah with The Rural Tutor. An experienced classroom teacher with over 10 years’ education experience, Judi Sheedy established The Rural Tutor in Gunnedah and Armidale to provide local, face-to-face, quality, individualised educational support.
“As a classroom teacher, I have always had a special interest in ensuring all students’ learning needs were being met. In Gunnedah, we are fortunate to have such great quality teachers and a mix of independent, Catholic and public schools,” explained Judi Sheedy, founding educator and director, The Rural Tutor.
“Most schools are able to provide small group support well, but simply do not have the resources to offer the individualised, tailored support that some of our students need. This is where The Rural Tutor works with families and schools to provide high quality individualised support.”
The Rural Tutor specialises in face-to-face literacy and numeracy intervention. “We follow the Science of Reading (SOR) approach for literacy intervention, which is an evidence-based approach of structured synthetic phonics recommended by SPELD and the Australian Dyslexic Association,” Mrs Sheedy said.
“This framework also applies to numeracy intervention where we follow the CRA approach – using Concrete block materials, students then represent what they have built with the blocks, before we introduce the abstract form of numbers.
“The relief experienced by students using these approaches, as they rediscover that they are smart, and that they can learn, is immensely rewarding. The nurturing, safe learning environment which The Rural Tutor team has created, enhances the student’s learning ability and confidence.”
Local Gunnedah mum Amanda Randall explained the benefit of The Rural Tutor for her son Cooper. “Your dedication has not only helped him catch up with his peers in the classroom but has also significantly boosted his confidence and understanding. The way you’ve worked with him to overcome the challenges of dyslexia and dysgraphia is truly remarkable. We feel so fortunate to have your services available in our area. Thank you for your patience, expertise, and positive impact you’ve made on his learning journey.
Michelle Sunderland, Gunnedah mum of Scarlett, said, “My daughter has come a very long way from where she started and majority of that is credit to Judi and her dedication and knowledge, to be able to cater to my daughter’s needs and identify the way she processes information and learns. Any issues were not a problem and when we were going through the diagnosis process, we felt so much support and encouragement. We would not be in the position where we are today without Judi.”
We have a growing team of passionate educators, who are keen to support students in their educational journey. At The Rural Tutor, we believe that it takes a village to raise a child, and we are privileged to be part of so many students’ journey.
